What is Toe Nail Fungus?

Updated: Sep 25

Nail Fungus or onychomycosis, pronounced "ah-nuh-co-my-co-sis" is a fungal infection of the nail set, which includes the nail plate, nail bed, and the surrounding skin. It's a common yet often overlooked condition that can affect anyone, leading to discomfort, unsightly nails, and a host of self-esteem issues.

Types of Nail Infections

There are 3 main causes of onychomycosis and they are dermatophytes, yeast and saprophytic mold.

Dermatophytes

Dermatophytes are a pathogenic fungus that grow on skin, mucous membranes, hair, nails, and other body surfaces, causing ringworm and related diseases.

Yeast

Yeast is a normal fungus that lives on the skin but when too much grows it causes an infection.

Saprophytic mold

Saprophytic mold is a type of fungus that feeds on dead and decaying organic matter. It is found in dirt. Bacteria can also cause a nail infection. The discoloration from a bacterial infection tends to be green or black.

Dermatophytes are the most common type of nail fungus infection and they are highly contagious.

How fungal infections work?

This fungal infection infiltrates the nail bed, leading to discolored, thickened, and brittle nails that can cause discomfort and even pain. While it may seem like a mere cosmetic concern, onychomycosis can significantly impact one's quality of life, causing embarrassment and hindering daily activities.

Lifecycle of fungi

Understanding the lifecycle of the fungi responsible for onychomycosis is crucial. These microscopic organisms thrive in warm, moist environments, making toenails particularly susceptible—especially in those who frequently wear tight shoes, engage in activities that cause excessive sweating, or have pre-existing health conditions such as diabetes. The infection typically starts at the tip of the nail and can progressively spread, leading to further complications if left untreated.

Symptoms of nail fungus

Symptoms of nail fungus include a nail or nails that are:

  • Thickened

  • Discolored

  • Brittle, crumbly or ragged

  • Misshapen

  • Separated from the nail bed

  • Smelly

One of the most significant challenges in treating onychomycosis is its propensity to return. Standard topical antifungal treatments don't penetrate the nail bed so don't fully eradicate the infection. Oral treatments are dangerous and can cause liver damage. This is where NF Remedy steps in as a game changer.

NF Remedy offers a targeted solution that addresses the root cause of the infection rather than just masking the symptoms.
